Welcome to Test Prep Tutoring!

I'm dedicated to helping students achieve their academic goals by providing personalized and effective SAT/ACT preparation. I strive to create a supportive learning environment where all students can excel.

Meet Chana Tolchin

My path to becoming a tutor occurred organically. After graduating Barnard College with a major in English, I taught middle school English for 1 year. I found that my favorite part of the job was working with students 1-on-1, and I started to think about tutoring as a way to support students individually.

At the same time, I was exploring my creative passions: music and art. My path of creativity led me to move to San Diego, where I loved the local music scene and felt artistically inspired. While performing as part of a folk band and teaching art workshops, I joined a tutoring agency (Grade Potential Tutoring) and found that tutoring went hand-in-hand with my creative pursuits: it gave me flexibility and also allowed me be creative with teaching approaches. In 2020, before the pandemic hit, I started tutoring SAT/ACT prep. To secure my first test prep tutoring job, I spent weeks in the library studying Math concepts and taking countless practice tests. I scored a 35 on my practice test to apply to PrepNow, which, in addition to my prior tutoring background, landed me the job! When Covid hit, I temporarily moved back to New Jersey and ramped up my tutoring hours (while continuing to teach art, too).

Now, I have become an expert SAT/ACT tutor. I have worked with 70 test prep students and over 120 students overall. I have helped students boost their scores by as much as 10 points on the ACT and as much as 200 points on the SAT per section. I have even created my own PDF study guides. I am committed to bringing my expertise to help students ace their exam!

My creative journey is ongoing - currently, I am working on recording my original songs. Just like I have my own projects, I want my students to be able to bring their full selves to tutoring. I am interested in hearing all about their passions and interests. The college prep journey is an opportunity for students to reflect on where they're headed in life. In addition to boosting students' scores, I enjoy being a supportive presence on the path to their future goals!

Based in San Diego, CA, I frequently spend time back home in Teaneck, NJ. I work with students in both time zones (and all over the country!).
